Born in 1946 in Kandi village (Karnah), Prof Abdul Wahid Qureshi grew up in a family rooted in education and faith. His father, Qazi Ghulam Nabi Qureshi, was among the earliest Mathematics teachers in Karnah. Qureshi’s Quranic education was guided by Maulana Mir Alam Qureshi, a respected Islamic scholar and calligrapher who also named him. Qureshi began his schooling in Kandi Karnah, completing his matriculation in 1961.
A childhood classmate, retired teacher Ghulam Sarwar Mir, described him as a bright and hardworking student. “His father’s emphasis on Mathematics gave him a strong foundation,” Mir recalled. In 1961, Qureshi joined SP College Srinagar for further studies. He completed his BA in Economics, Political Science, Persian, and English in 1965 while living in the college hostel, which has nurtured many distinguished personalities.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Although drawn to Persian studies, Qureshi’s Economics professor at SP College, Mohammed Abdullah, encouraged him to pursue the subject at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). In 1966, he became the first from Karnah to join AMU, where he earned an MA in Economics in 1967, graduating as the topper of his class. Shortly after, Qureshi began his academic career as a lecturer in the Humanities Department at the Regional Engineering College (REC) Srinagar, now the National Institute of Technology (NIT). However, within months, he joined the University of Kashmir as a lecturer in Economics in March 1968, a position he secured through a competitive process.

In 1969, AMU introduced a policy allowing MA position holders employed in academic institutions to pursue a PhD via distance mode, provided they spent annual vacations on campus. Professor Qureshi utilised this opportunity, completing his PhD in 1975 with a specialisation in Statistics and Public Finance, becoming again the first individual from Karnah to achieve this academic milestone. After starting teaching at the University, Qureshi settled in Saderbal, near the campus, where he Professor Shahid Rasool noted his “simple living and high thinking,” while others highlighted his keen judgment and deep understanding of policymaking in higher education.
